Clean Air Strategy

The UK government aims to reduce particulate matter emissions by 30% by 2020, and by 46% by 2030, aiming to improve public health and to help people live well for longer.

The Government’s Clean Air Strategy (CAS) looks towards setting ambitious targets in the near future to reduce emissions of five of the most damaging air pollutants (fine particulate matter, ammonia, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, non-methane volatile organic compounds) by 2020 and 2030.

The Clean Air Strategy and use of Solid Fossil Fuel for Heating

A number of measures are being implemented as part of the Clean Air Strategy  by the Government to try to reduce the amount of Particulate Matter produced by the burning of solid fossil fuel in domestic properties.

ECO DESIGN 2022

Only Ecodesign ready stoves will be available for sale from 2022.

These are the most efficient stoves available and emit much less pollution than non Ecodesign stoves.

They also save you money as they burn the fuel more efficiently producing more heat per KG of fuel burnt.

Encourage use of more efficient fuels

Through public education on good practice and by introducing further legislation imposing limits on the purchase of wet logs and banning the sale of traditional house coal.

A new test standard is being developed  to ensure only the cleanest fuels meeting this strict standard can be sold.

The Smoke Control Area (SCA) legislation is being altered to make it easier for Local Authorities to create new SCAs and enforce their current ones.

Decrease particulate matter released

The overall aim of the different steps detailed within the Clean Air Strategy is to reduce  levels of harmful chemicals and pollutants such as particulate matter (PM10/PM2.5) within the UK.

The strategy is aiming to align air quality, clean growth and fuel poverty work into future policy.

The change of fuel types and stoves available will reduce the pollution released from domestic properties.
